Purpose of job 

To manage the British Council’s English Hub in Medan, North Sumatra, which will offer English language teaching and exams and have responsibility for the core functions of finance, sales, marketing and HR.

The main focus of the role initially will be to recruit and develop a team to implement strategic plans and position the center as the “go to” for English language services in North Sumatra, including direct and digital teaching and teacher training, exams (IELTS and Aptis) and Education services, with support from senior managers based in Jakarta.

The post-holder will work closely with an expatriate Academic Manager, responsible for product development and service delivery.

Context and environment

The British Council aims to significantly increase its work in English, Arts and Education across Indonesia. It aims to phase in English hubs over 5 years from 2014 with the first in Medan to provide the people of North Sumatra with access to the highest quality UK English teaching, teacher training and examinations.

Accountabilities, responsibilities and main duties

  • Business Management and Development: To resource the centre and oversee launch, implement the English strategy, establish and grow the business.
  • Marketing and Sales: Through a marketing orientation, develop an action plan to establish the centre in the Medan market, raise brand awareness and encourage positive perceptions of the British Council and the UK through an effective sales strategy and quality service delivery.
  • Financial Planning and Management: Agree, report on and be accountable for financial and impact targets for across our portfolio of English products offered in the Medan centre to ensure compliance with internal and external policies and audit requirements. 

core responsibilities

  • Specifically, over the first 6 months the post holder will need to:
  • Work closely with Director English, property consultants and contractors to ensure centre launch to deadline
  • Work closely with Business Support Services Jakarta to resource the new centre
  • Develop strategies with local partners/Jakarta Marcomms team to position the centre, build brand awareness, develop and implement promotional campaign for launch and establishment
  • Embed a strong marketing and sales ethic in the team
  • Establish relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including DINAS team, local tax authorities, Ministry of Education and local government.

Once established main duties will be 

  • To conductively line manage up to 6 members of staff
  • To act at all financial planning, analysis and reporting to British Council corporate standards and deadlines
  • To manage the Centre to agreed business performance targets
  • To manage the Centre to agreed quality standards
  • To manage the marketing, promotion and development of new business, both on and off-site, and relationships with internal and external customers.
  • To lead the Medan Centre team and ensure effective HR management (including Performance Management and Learning & Development)
  • To effects  a member of Indonesia SMT

Key relationships: (include internal and external) 

  • Internally: Director English Indonesia, Academic Manager Medan, BSS team Jakarta, Medan team.
  • Externally: Local authorities, Sumatra MOE, corporate partners and all British Council Medan learners and parents

Other important features or requirements of the job 

  • Periodic travel across to Jakarta and EA for training/shadowing/meetings.

Business Management and Development

At least 5 years of Sales/Marketing and/or General Management Experience in the service industry with proven track record of meeting business targets. Knowledge of the Indonesian context

Education to degree level or above

C1 English (IELTS 7+)
