“All is progressing well, universities in the UK responded to the situation in a prompt manner” says Raffi Akbar Oekasah, an Indonesian student at the University of Glasgow

How long have you been in quarantine and how are you adapting to the current situation?
It has been three months, and all is progressing well. The University responded to the situation in a very cautious and prompt manner. They supported me in academic and social aspects, including providing various online services regarding mental wellbeing.

It’s been several months since the first Covid-19 case was announced in the UK. What are the changes that you see in your city now?
Today, Glasgow is moving towards a new normal with exceptional progress. The support and crisis measurement by the Scottish government were extraordinary. Due to that reason the shops and parks are now open for public even though we still have to comply with the health protocols.

How do you feel as an international student living and studying in the UK in this time of uncertainty?
I am feeling safer, as in the UK especially Scotland, the crisis measurement and action is clear and right on target. Therefore, I am planning to go back to Glasgow with my family. My wife will also start her postgraduate programme this September. We are confident as the UK government and the University has full support and prompt help for international students.

How is your university supporting international students like yourself?
Universities, particularly the University of Glasgow, have a clear stand and much support for the student. They provide an easy access to the online library and meeting platforms as well as provide online services for mental health matters. For example, there is a class online or the University team is ready 24/7 for the student counselling.

Could you share with us how online learning is delivered in your university? from pre-Covid times?
The online lectures are delivered via a meeting app or an audio presentation that could be downloaded anytime, so basically you could study anytime at your own pace. Before exams, we have a group study discussion via the meeting app, and it is very convenient as we can arrange the time as we wish. The University provides us a huge variation of academic resources that is accessible through online library even though some of the printed books are not as accessible as before the pandemic. The library still provides us the opportunity to borrow.

I can study at my own pace anytime, and the lecturers are very supportive as they also have more flexible time regarding a meeting. As the meeting is recorded, it becomes easier to take notes regarding important things on the lecture.

Could you share an example of online learning method or practice introduced by your university that you find particularly helpful?
The recorded online lecture and the downloadable voice presentation. These methods help as the details of what the lecturers said could be stored more efficiently, compared to the face to face lecture, as i the students miss some information.

What’s your plan after graduation?
I am accompanying my wife as she will start her postgraduate study in this September. Also, I am looking for a job maybe in Glasgow.
